When 11-year-old Tony was abandoned by his parents for the second time, foster parent Peter Mutabazi stepped in to help. Initially, Peter signed up to care for Tony for just one weekend, but that short time was all it took for the two to form an unbreakable bond. Now, Peter has officially adopted Tony.
Tony’s story is one of heartbreak and resilience. Given up for adoption at birth, he spent years in the foster care system before being adopted by a family.
Tragically, that family later abandoned him at a North Carolina hospital when he was just 11 years old, leaving him behind once again.
Peter, who had been fostering for three years, was deeply moved by Tony’s story. Having endured a difficult childhood himself—running away from an abusive home in Uganda at age 10—Peter understood the importance of providing a safe and loving home.
After spending the weekend together, Peter knew Tony belonged with him, and Tony never left.
Peter describes becoming Tony’s dad as one of his greatest joys, continuing the cycle of kindness that changed his own life.
